We can. I can.

Sunday, February the 4th is the third annual “World Cancer Day”. World Cancer Day is all about spreading awareness about cancer, providing educational material and pressing governments into action. The theme of this year’s day is “We can. I can.” This challenges each of us to reflect on what we can do as a group, or as an individual to help those with cancer. As I am just starting my journey as an independent, cancer rehabilitation therapist I find this day and this message to be quite timely. I have spent a lot of time over the past year thinking about just that.

We can spread awareness and provide support for those around us who have been impacted by cancer. This will help promote wellness for cancer survivors by giving them access to information about treatments, exercise, nutrition, sleep, etc. and help them to be their own best advocates. We can be united with our peers around the world and know that we are all working towards a common goal.

I can facilitate access to quality rehabilitation before, during and after treatments for cancer. This will help people to regain their strength and function, a part of the journey that often gets missed. I can work with my community to build a network of cancer survivors who are thriving and achieving their wellness goals, whatever they may be. I can help to raise funds to make this service more accessible to our community and spread the word about the benefits of exercise for people with or recovering from cancer.

I plan to do all of this and more over the next year. What can you do??
